What’s the official language? English and Maori
Do people usually speak the official language or another language? But you wouldn’t hear any young person speaking Maori
Do people generally speak English well? Yes
How do people greet each other? Friends: students: handshake on first meeting; hugs for girls after; not kissing; verbal hello
What are stereotypes of the French in your country? Rude; if you don’t try and speak French they get annoyed; love food and wine and cheese
Do people value education in your country? (On a scale from 1-5) A lot of young people don’t care and go straight to work from high school but there are some that go to university. Culture thing (Maori)
How many years is it considered 'normal' for children to go to school? Have to be at school until your 16. Lots of people stop. There are 5 years in high school, the first 2 years are whatever, and then you have to pass the 3-year to get anywhere.
In higher education, do students live at home or at the school? If it’s in your city you live at home, it depends on what you’re studying for where you have to go. There are dorms at the university. There are catered meals as an option for all meals.
How formal/informal is the student/teacher relationship? Very informal compared to France – play sports and go out to drinks with professors. You can have an outside relationship.
What is the most common mode of transportation in your city? (Car, walk, bike, public transportation, etc.)? What kinds of public transportation are there? CAR. Most students have cars. You can get a driver’s license when you’re 16. You can drive in New Zealand on a French license for a year. You can rent or buy a car.
What kinds of public transportation are there? There are buses, no metros – don’t rely on them.
Work and Play
Why is work valued (e.g., financial gain, group welfare, individual satisfaction, promotion of group cohesiveness, fulfillment or creation of obligations to/from others, position in the community)? Yes, but lots of people complain. Valued to get paid; a lot people complain.
What are the most common leisure activities? Sport – any type. At university you can go sign up for any sport. Movies.
Is there a “national sport”? What sports are most popular? Rugby, netball (basketball but you can’t run with the ball).
Time and Space
How important is 'punctuality'? They’re not gonna care if you’re late to class; but it depends on the lecturer. People don’t really care if you’re late.
How much “space” is customary to leave between people as you are talking? Don’t want to be too close, even with close friends.
To what extent is physical touch appropriate or inappropriate? Don’t talk to strangers. Even with friends, depends.
What behaviors are considered socially unacceptable for young adults in general? Don’t talk to a stranger in the street (exception: asking for directions); DO NOT do the kissing thing to greet people.
Do girls and boys work together and interact? Is it proper? Yes, fine
What gestures, postures, or language have special significance or may be considered offensive? The middle finger
What is the dominant religion of your country? Christianity, have most religions because multi cultural country.
To what extent does religion play a role in community life? Not a huge thing, there are some school that are specifically religious, there are churches, but it’s not a huge thing.
What foods are common to eat for an every day meal? Same; NO coffee after meals (just starter, main, dessert)
If you were to stereotype the food in your own country what would you say? (For example, the stereotype of French food is that it is classy, refined, and we eat a lot of bread and cheese). Normal” à you can get everything
What clothing is 'typical'? People wear gym clothes all summer, very casual, common to have people to school with no shoes (at all ages), more casual than France
What is worn for special occasions (for girls and guys)? Sometimes people don’t dress up, but for interview, you have do research on company and see what everyone is wearing (do your research!) – you want to look nice but you want to do your research.
Is anything considered inappropriate? Nothing
Pets and other Animals
Do any animals have religious significance?National Kiwi bird – nocturnal bird, national bird
What animals are common pets?
Dogs and cats mainly.
Art and Music
What music do young people generally listen to? Mainly American, but there are some New Zealand singers
What do you do on weekends? Saturday is sport day – if you play a sport that’s the day you do a competition. Sunday is an normal day – everything is open, it’s like a week day.
Is hanging out with your friends common?
Yes. Quite common.
What does social life revolve around? (Do schools provide opportunities for social activities? Or is it up to you and your friends to create your social life?) School. There are so many groups: sports, singing, and music…
